G’day, I’m Mitch.

Born and raised in Cairns, I’ve spent my life exploring the rainforests, wetlands, and savannahs of Far North Queensland, and I’m genuinely grateful to be able to share it with you. I don’t just know where the birds are — I’ve grown up alongside them. From Victoria’s Riflebird to the elusive Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher and the stunning Golden Bowerbird, I’ve spent years tracking down the best local spots (most of which aren’t on the radar for most visiting birders) to reliably see our region’s most sought-after species.

Each tour is tailored to your target birds and your fitness level. Some of my best sites require a 30–40 minute hike — but you’ll be rewarded with a guaranteed endemic at the end. If that’s not your thing, I’ve got plenty of “chilled, flat-surface-type” tours too, which are just as rewarding. It’s really up to you.

I love birds, and there’s no better feeling than seeing a lifer for the first time — especially when I get to share that moment with someone else.

Pretty Good Birding isn’t your typical tour. It’s half the price of most bird tours, twice the laughs, and 100% local knowledge — no Wikipedia research here, just decades of firsthand experience in the field. I also grew up with my grandfather, Prof. John Fox — a Professor of Botany and Forestry — whose research and teaching helped me understand the ecology and biological relationships that connect these ancient rainforests to our unique birdlife.
